Mary Queen of Scots?!!??

As a follow up to Brother Calvin (previous post so I'm not linking to it) comes this one.

Elizabeth Sheppard (nee (born as) Sarah Elizabeth Ballantine) "A first Cousin of Mary Queen of Scots". You can also find a picture of it posted here so obviously there are quite a few people who find cemeteries interesting. Now at first this inscription might not seem so odd. Hey, she was related to Mary Queen of Scots - cool. Hey, she was a first cousin - Bu Ya. Well, er, wait.

Mary queen of Scots lived from 1542 – 1587. Another side of this stone stated that the woman (birth name Elizabeth Ballantine) died in 1944 (born in 1849). My understanding of first cousins is the children of a sibling. I have several first cousins, each of them sired by my father’s or mother’s siblings. Once you go beyond that you get into 2nd, 3rd, etc., umpteen times removed cousins. The Encyclopedia is not contradicting this understanding “first cousin who is the child of a mother's brother or of a father's sister.”, nor did an on-line dictionary, nor is my relative ("The son or daughter of an uncle or aunt.") and a host of other sites. The dictionary gave perahps the broadest definition, but a first cousin is still implied to be well...in the same (relative) generation. Ah well, it is interesting and one wonders how she ended up in America and then in Springfield, MO. Perhaps I’ll do some further inquiries but then again, probably not.
